So I am posting here not because my comment is appropriate to what Hilary wrote, but simply because there is some empty space. I don't like empty space, and my heart was overjoyed to see one more bit of empty space gone from Holy Family curtesy of Fr. D. R. of the O. Incidentally, I did follow the link in this post to John's blog, and he says something about promoting the use of the "ae" diphthong. Now pay attention all of you. This ==> "æ" is called a LIGATURE. Whether one uses it or not, for example in the Latin word for sky "caelum", the word itself will always have the diphthong "aj" if one choses to use the Classical pronunciation. Funilly enough, the biggest "ae" ligature afficionados are also the ones who most often use the Italianate pronunciation of Latin, and therefore they are not producing a diphthong at all, but a pure vowel "e".
And one final thing, in case it has not dawned on you yet: the English word sky, also has the "aj" diphthong just as in caelum when we pronounce it like Tully did. Whatever you do to the pronunciation and spelling of Latin though, please don't start spelling it "skæ" in English. I'm sure the Lady of the blog would come after you and the result would be less than pretty.
I'm not so sure. I've been using "Ynglonde" lately and have been known to coin my own Ynglishhe verb tenses: "tooken", being my favourite lately.
When I was a kid and my mother was teaching me grammar, she said that if you know the rules well, you can break them and it is poetry.
If you don't know the rules, you're just an illiterate git who can't write.
