As I was saying...

I read the other day that a certain famous theologian teaching in a Roman university, was arrested by the Inquisition whilst giving a lecture. He was detained four years and exonerated upon examination. When he was released he calmly returned to his lectern and began, "As I was saying yesterday..."

Hmm. Bears a suspicious resemblance to the (true) story of Fr Herbert McCabe, O.P. who was editor of Blackfriars in the 70s and removed for a time by the Master General of the Order. No prison, but he was "silenced." I have a feeling you would have been on the side of the Master General. Be that as it may, when he returned he started out his next editorial as you report.
